Recently, I've taken to maccha tea. I remember J once asking a few months ago if I drank maccha, and I said no, that I've never heard of it. But when I looked in my tea cupboard, there the Jagasilk tin was. I guess I never really even looked at the label, since my sister had bought it for me from the cafe she works at. That stuff is good. I mean really good.

But it's expensive as hell! A tiny 40g tin costs $28 ... I get it for $14 since my sister gets 50% off merch at her cafe. But even that is pricey.

Anyway, I was doing my grocery shopping last night and happened upon a box of "special maccha gunpowder tea" for $2.19 at the Asian store. $2.19. What?! I didn't buy it, because I just bought a new tin of the good stuff on the weekend ... but even if the quality isn't as good, it might be worth checking out. I know there are different grades of maccha, and chances are the one from the Asian store will taste like floor sweepings compared to the Jagasilk. Still. I'm no math whiz, but $2.19 is a lot cheaper than $14.

I think I may have tried it. But in all honesty, I didn't love what I tried. I will give it another try though. I think the cafe where I tried it messed up the drink somehow, because it seemed almost chalky in texture to me. A type of tea I really like is Genmaicha (toasted brown rice green tea).

I have had many bad ones. The best was on a JAL flight to Japan, naturally. I didn't think to ask the brand. Silly me. They kept coming round with it and instead of the typical bitter aftertaste--it was slightly sweet. When I related how odd that was to someone with whom I'd had maccha many years prior, she responded that this maccha must have been the good kind.

I've got some of the bad stuff in my desk right now but I don't own a wisk so, too bad.
