This weekend when I was working at my part-time job at the arena, an older couple stopped me and said that they used to be friends of my parents, when I was growing up. I guess they hadn't seen me since I was 8 or 9 ... so it was kind of cool that they even recognized me!

Anyway, they said something that I've been thinking about all weekend ... they said that they couldn't believe I was in the career field, doing the exact job I had told them I wanted to do when I was just a kid. And you know what? They're totally right. Granted, it's just a part-time job, but it's a start. I remember, when I was around 8 years old, I knew exactly what I wanted to do ... and that conversation with them makes me even more determined to keep trying to move up in this career path, and get to the top.

It makes me feel good that, even though I took a long, round-about way of getting to where I am today ... I eventually did get here. It's sometimes hard to keep an eye on the big picture, when you see your peers around you shooting up and achieving. It makes me feel like I'm getting left behind. But I know I'll eventually get to where I want to be ... it'll just be on my own time, and at my own pace.

While my full-time job isn't exactly what I want to be doing for the rest of my life, I'm learning things, gaining great experience, and meeting industry contacts ... so a few years down the road, maybe I'll be ready for that dream job opportunity when it eventually does comes up.

I wanted to save the world from environmental destruction and be a writer... I guess my goal is going more slowly then expected as well.

"What do I want to be when I grow up? Young." (hehehe. Anybody else remember the film version of "A Chorus Line"?)

Ok, so one day I'll figure out what I want to be when I grow up. For now, I'm happy daydreaming about the million and one jobs I would like to try before I retire...

I seriously wanted to be a psychologist when I was 8. Apparently, I was a serious little kid. I'm not a psychologist now, but my goals changed as I got older. I'm actually doing exactly what I want to be doing and I love my work. I consider myself really blessed/lucky.

I remember an assembly at school where we had a carepartner introduce us to the school and say what we wanted to be when we grew up. everyone else wanted to be teachers, firefighters, nurses, or doctors. I wanted to be a hairdresser. And everyone in the audience giggled. I was a sensitive kid, so I remember being soooo embarassed because people laughed. Anyways, I wanted to be a hairdresser because I LOVED the woman who cut my hair. She was great. But now when I think back on it, that is one career that I would be absolutely HORRIBLE at, truly horrific.

I don't know how, but even at a young age, I realized that you worked different jobs before you became the "final" job you wanted to be.

So, growing up I wanted to be an egyptologist AND a writer. But, while in college, I wanted to be a waitress. Ironically, I waitress (and bartend) now and am ultimately going for a PhD in Cultural Anthropology. I still want to be published too! My goal is to make it into National Geographic.
