Last night, I went for a 40 min. run. I could have run longer, but I kept getting sketched out. Every car that drove by with their window down, I thought they were for sure going to pull a gun and shoot me. Vancouver scares me. I'm always paranoid. But I don't think I'm overly paranoid. Stuff like this happens all. the. time. in Vancouver. A few days ago, J told me a story about how a girl was just walking down a road, and some guy grabbed her, dragged her 2 blocks, and then raped and killed her. And apparently people in houses all along that road heard her screaming for help, but did nothing. That scares me.

Anyway, I think I'm going to run again tonight, but perhaps a little earlier in the evening than yesterday. I'm determined to get myself into great shape. There's only so much eating healthy will do for you - if you're not exercising along with eating a balanced diet, then all is lost. And I even went so far as to think about throwing away the chocolate I have in the house. But that would be wasteful. And I'm not one to be wasteful. :)

And now, another edition of - what's in my lunch bag!?

Breakfast 9:00am
1 cup of green tea
2 cups of filtered water

Snack 10:30am
1 cup of green tea
1 All-Bran bar

Lunch 1:00pm
1 small can of tuna with a bowl of red leaf lettuce and sprouts
3 organic flax crackers
1 small banana

Snack 3:00pm
1 small apple
1 whole grain Kashi bar

Also, the reason why I don't eat breakfast is because it makes me feel really gross for the rest of the day. I automatically feel really heavy and sluggish, no matter what I eat. Sometimes I'll eat breakfast though. On a lazy Sunday, a big breakfast is nice sometimes ... but for the most part, I don't eat anything. Plus, a few years ago my nutritionist (yes, I had a nutritionist ... ahh back when I was an athlete ...), she told me that for those with a light appetite, drinking a few cups of tea in the morning or some water instead of breakfast is beneficial to your health. I don't remember what her reasoning was, but it seemed to make sense at the time, and it's something I've always remembered.

I understand how easy it is to get sketched out if you are running in the dark or nearly dark, especially if you come from a smaller city where you feel safer. I do think you are being a little paranoid though, the crime in Vancouver (especially gun crime) is mostly gang related. As for the story about the girl, when did this happen? I've not read about any recent rapes and murders in the news.
Honestly Vancouver is one of the safest large cities I have lived in, just don't put yourself in a situation where you feel uncomfortable, I'm sure you'll be ok. Maybe look into a local community gym for running, they're usually pretty cheap.
I'm not trying to ignore your fears just hope that you won't let them get to you too much while you get used to your new home.

anonymous: I don't think that the story about the girl happened recently. And to be fair, it wasn't even in my neighbourhood. But, if anything, it was in a safer neighbourhood than mine.

And I know that Vancouver is relatively safe compared to other big cities ... and it will probably take some time to get used to my surroundings. Even last night, as I was running in the "rich" area of my neighbourhood, I still felt unsafe. Like I would turn the corner, and someone rich punk would jump out of his BMW and stab me with a huge knife or something, just for kicks.

An athletic nutritionist really told you not to eat breakfast? I see a nutritionist regularly (not because I'm an athlete, though), and she's always reminding about eating breakfast, which I find difficult: she says a solid breakfast with a good macronutrient balance is essential to a healthy metabolism. I've been eating a couple of turkey meatballs from Trader Joe's with homemade healthy muffins (flaxseed meal, carrots, apples, nuts, etc.).

It's an inexact science, though, and the key is to find what works for you, you know? As long as you're happy & healthy, keep on doing what you're doing.

Also, if you have a naturally healthy metabolism (I don't; basically my entire endocrine system is deficient) you probably have more leeway than I do in the eating-breakfast department. And you're getting a snack in pretty early, so...yeah.

English Major: I think her theory behind not eating breakfast was because we had practice from 7-9am, and I found I was basically forcing food down my throat at 6am, when my body wasn't hungry at all. Which caused me to perform below my ability level.

And now, I'm not sure if it's because I've never really eaten breakfast on a regular basis since my athletic days ... but I find that I'm not hungry at all until at least 10am anyway, so there's really no need to eat breakfast.

I only will run by the beach--no cars or residential houses, a nice running path, and lots of other runner/joggers to make me feel safe. I drive 1 mile to the beach to run on it. Pathetic, but it keeps me feeling safe.

    You could carry pepper spray?

Well according to my latest fearmongering Macleans Vancouver AND Victoria are a hotbed of crime ... don't know what y'all are doing out west, come to safe Toronto and run in safety!
